While Downstage's shows have taken place in a variety of venues throughout Calgary, our home base
is in the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts. There, you'll find the Downstage office as well as EPCOR CENTRE's Motel, where much of Downstage's work is performed. Motel is one of two arts venues run by Downstage, and both Motel and birds and stone are available for use by other artists and arts organizations.
Motel is an intimate, 50-seat venue located in the heart of downtown Calgary in the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts, across the hall from One Yellow Rabbit's Big Secret Theatre. This flexible black-box space is perfect for a wide range of activities including theatre, dance and music performances, visual art galleries, installations, readings, launches and more and is constantly buzzing with the work of Alberta's most exciting independent artists and performing arts companies.
Downstage accepts proposals from artists seeking to present work in this unique cultivation space on an ongoing basis, and prioritizes providing opportunities to emerging artists while also seeking a diverse range of work in different disciplines. Groups presenting their work in Motel are charged a usage fee for the space and also have the option of arranging ticketing services through the EPCOR CENTRE Box Office. Downstage is committed to ensuring that Motel is one of the most affordable and accessible theatre venues in Calgary.
