Nick, a Canadian university student, decides to spend his summer volunteering in a Liberian refugee
camp in Ghana. But the Lonely Planet guidebook doesn't prepare you for nightmare scenarios. When
Nick befriends a former child soldier, Abraham, he is taken hostage in a desperate bid to stop a war
crimes trial from proceeding in the Hague.
Inspired by interviews that playwright Matthew MacKenzie conducted during two trips to the Buduburam
refugee camp in 2004 and 2007, SIA tackles the challenging relationship between North America and
West Africa through a carefully woven story of hope and atrocity.
This riveting new play from one of Canada's most exciting young playwrights was the Grand Prize Winner of the 2010 Alberta Playwriting
Competition (sponsored by Alberta Playwrights Network), where the jury praised this engrossing and heartbreaking play for being "honest, hard-hitting and on the mark".

"Masterful; an intelligent, well constructed tale that entertains while reminding us that issues in the developing world are rarely as black and white as they sometimes seem." - Eye Weekly
"[A] smart, gripping drama that explores the complex grey of people and politics." - Now Toronto
