Our 2011-12 Season offers a World Premiere by the Downstage Creation Ensemble, the Western Canadian Premiere of an award-winning work by an exciting up-and-coming playwright and
the Calgary Premiere of a celebrated play by one of Canada's best known writers. It's a season of diverse offerings, but there's a clear theme present throughout.
At the heart of this season is relationships - between brothers and sisters, children and their parents, between industries, neighbours, strangers, and countries. Each of the shows in our season explores the collision of different cultures, perspectives and ways of life. This commonality isn't that surprising since it's central to our philosophy of how to
present Provocative Canadian Performance - zero in on the personal experiences that bring political and social questions to life.
In Drew Hayden Taylor's Governor General's Award-nominated play In A World Created By A Drunken God, two brothers meet for the first time. One is Canadian, the other American; one First Nations,
the other non-Native. But they come to be defined less by their cultural backgrounds and more by their relationship or lack thereof with a dying man - their father. In SIA, a new work by Albertan playwright Matthew MacKenzie, Canadian
student Nick is ill-equipped for the realities of a Liberian refugee camp in Ghana. And in Good Fences, the newest work by the Downstage Creation Ensemble, we explore the relationship between two of Alberta's most crucial industries - energy and
agriculture.
We're also embarking on some new artistic relationships, as we partner with Alberta Theatre Projects, with Lethbridge's New West Theatre and with companies across the country as we begin touring our acclaimed creation In The
Wake. The return of the 10 Minute Play Festival in January 2012, a part of One Yellow Rabbit's High Performance Rodeo, allows us to continue to present the work of Calgary's best independent theatre companies.
And of course the most important relationship is with you, our audience. We're committed to producing work that is inventive, thought-provoking and highly relevant to your lives, and this season we're renewing our commitment to inspiring dialogue by
finding new ways to connect with you and connect you with each other. See you at the theatre!
