Featuring Lora Brovold, Christopher Hunt, Duval Lang, Scott Olynek, Valerie Ann Pearson & Simone Saunders Directed by Simon Mallett A heartbroken playwright named Michael Redhill stands in front of an audience. He's telling a story he promised never to tell - of a prison guard named Althea, whose prisoner is an old man accused of orchestrating a genocide in her country. His beautiful daughter claims he has Alzheimer's. The prosecutor insists he's faking the illness to escape punishment. Can guilt dissolve with the memory of what caused it? Goodness is a morality tale for a modern age, an intricate web of stories that dance with difficult questions. And as its six performers circle this tangled tale about the grey shades of good and evil, threaded with choral music from across the globe, they are forced to consider the power of story - over those who live it, those who tell it, and those who hear it. Downstage's production of Goodness is directed by Simon Mallett and features Lora Brovold, Christopher Hunt, Duval Lang, Scott Olynek, Valerie Ann Pearson & Simone Saunders. Set & lighting design is by Neil Fleming, sound design by Peter Moller, costume design by Melanie Richard, musical direction by Angela Cavar, production management by Caitlin Ferguson and stage management by Tuled Giovanazzi. Assistant directed by Ulla Laidlaw, assistant set & lighting design by Janet Mader. "Redhill's gripping and important play…has the intimacy and discordant reach of a late Beethoven string quartet." -New York Times "Not for the faint of heart, but if you like theatre that gives you lots to think about, you can't do much better than Goodness." -CBC Radio |
