Botticelli in the Fire by Jordan Tannahill

Alberta Premiere Co-Produced by Downstage in collaboration with Hit & Myth Productions - The Big Secret Theatre, Arts Commons (soon to be Werklund Centre)

This fierce reimagining of Renaissance Florence thrusts famed painter Sandro Botticelli into a world of hedonism, ambition, and moral reckoning. As the city falls under the grip of a puritanical regime, Botticelli must choose between protecting his life and preserving his art—and his truth.

Award-winning Canadian playwright Jordan Tannahill weaves queer identity, political resistance, and creative defiance into a genre-bending, time-tripping spectacle that speaks directly to our fractured present.

Accessibility: The spaces that Downstage will use for auditions, rehearsals, and performances for Botticelli in the Fire are in Arts Commons and are accessible via elevators. There is also an accessible washroom and kitchenette available for each space. The dressing room of the Big Secret Theatre is connected directly to the stage via a spiral staircase. As such, an alternate dressing room can be created in Motel Theatre as needed. Motel Theatre is directly across from Big Secret Theatre and does not require stairs. Artists collaborating on this production will not require staff assistance to enter rehearsal or performance spaces.
