Backstage
If you have read Downstage's artistic mandate or have seen our shows and think that you would like to get involved in the work we're doing, you'll find the information you need on this page. If you don't see the information you're looking for or have questions, please contact us.

Actors
We seek to provide opportunities to both emerging and established actors, Equity and non-Equity, and do our best to see artists whose work we are not familiar with through our audition processes. When applicable, audition notices are sent out through our e-newsletter (sign up at the bottom of the page) and other avenues, but if you would like to be added to our actor database, please send a resume and headshot to us by mail. Due to the volume of material we receive, we cannot accept submissions for our database electronically.

Playwrights & Creators
If you have an original script or project that you would like Downstage to consider for production, please send an email to info@downstage.ca with a brief letter describing the name of the piece, a brief synopsis (200-300 words), the number of characters & performers required, and any relevant production history. We will contact you if we are interested in receiving a copy of the script by mail. Downstage also seeks material for production through the Uprising National Playwriting Competition. More information on the competition is available in the right-hand column of this page.

Downstage's biennial presentation festival Uprising: A Festival of New Political Theatre will have its next edition in the fall of 2012. While Downstage actively seeks out programming for the festival, we also accept submissions from Canadian artists and companies for consideration.

Uprising aims to support the development of contemporary political work in the Canadian theatre repertoire. In addition to previously produced and touring shows, companies or artistic teams that have a new script or performance creation in development in line with the festival's mandate are encouraged to submit. Selected shows are given a public run during the course of the festival and paid a festival artist fee for their participation.

Directors, Designers & More
If you're looking to get involved as a director, assistant director, designer or in any other artistic capacity, please contact Artistic Producer Simon Mallett by e-mail at simon@downstage.ca.
Playwriting Competition
The Uprising National Playwriting Competition: Peace, Politics and Society is a joint initiative of Downstage and the Consortium for Peace Studies at the University of Calgary. The competition celebrates playwrights whose work dynamically engages with social and political issues and/or promotes peace, social justice and human rights.
